In the past six years of designing hand-turned wooden urns and talking to many families, I have learned the trend these days for a proper memorial to a departed loved one is to thoughtfully personalize the event to reflect the unique life of the deceased. Many details go into the memorial, from choosing the service location to customizing the final resting place. The third blog in our Celebration of Life series is Choosing Celebration Decorations, giving examples and resources to help you honor your beloved family member with an unforgettable celebration of life.
After you have chosen a location, now you can start thinking about decorations. Many of the same location questions apply with decorating—what were their passions, what did they spend time doing, where did he or she enjoy visiting? After answering these questions, you can start to come up with ideas for decorations.
For example, let’s say you have a grandparent or father who spent his spare time fishing or hunting. You could create decorations that reflect a fishing/hunting theme. Some ideas include a flower basket with bobbers, antler centerpieces, or pictures of your loved one with their catch.
Another decoration could be a timeline of pictures from the loved one’s life. It could be hung on a board, string, or displayed throughout the room. It is always interesting to see pictures from every point of someone’s life—it shows the exciting impact the person had on the world. Pictured here is a collage of photos used as a table runner.
A unique idea for a decoration is a memory jar. Guests can write a favorite memory of the loved one on a slip of paper and put it into the jar. The memories could be read out loud at some point in the party as well.
Choosing a Personalized Resting Place
I have created a beautiful line of turned wooden urns which may be personalized to honor the memory of your loved one. Each cremation urn featured in the Steve Shannon Collection is a unique piece specially handcrafted by me; no two are exactly alike.
